The quiet costs of running Magento 1
No official security patches
Adobe ended support in June 2020. Known vulnerabilities in old software are public, and attackers scan for them.
Card data on an unpatched store
Taking payments on unsupported software puts PCI compliance and customer trust at risk.
Abandoned extensions
Many modules you depend on stopped getting updates, and few vendors still support Magento 1.
Aging hosting and PHP
Modern hosting and PHP versions no longer target Magento 1, so keeping it running gets harder every year.
Fewer people who know it
Developers who want to work on Magento 1 are scarce, and each fix costs more time.
A slow store and a slow admin
The old frontend and backend hold back both your shoppers and your team.
When BigCommerce fits, and when Magento 2 fits better
If your store is mostly standard and you want far less upkeep, BigCommerce is a sound destination. Hosting, patching and upgrades stop being your problem.
If you rely on heavy customization, complex B2B rules or unusual catalog logic, Magento 2 may suit you better, and a Magento 1 to Magento 2 move is a familiar path. We will say which one we think you are.
BigCommerce is usually right when
- You want hosting and upgrades off your plate
- Your Magento 1 add-ons were mostly standard features
- You need B2B pricing and company accounts, without building them
- You want to keep many of your existing URLs
- Your team is lean
What BigCommerce gives a Magento 1 store
A supported, managed and patched platform
BigCommerce is hosted and updated for you, so the unpatched platform problem goes away instead of moving to a new server.
Fewer extensions to maintain
Many Magento 1 modules did a job BigCommerce handles natively, so your add-on list gets shorter.
B2B Edition
Company accounts, custom pricing and quoting are native, which means less custom code to maintain.
Flexible URLs
BigCommerce lets you set custom URLs, so many Magento 1 addresses can be kept exactly and fewer redirects are needed.
A modern Stencil theme
Your design is rebuilt on a current theme framework, with a faster storefront that is easier to change.

Three steps that keep your rankings
Map
Every product, category and page on your Magento 1 store gets a destination, including the long legacy paths and suffixes built up over the years.
Redirect
Where BigCommerce can keep your old URL, we keep it. Where it cannot, a 301 sends visitors and search engines to the new address.
Verify
We test redirects before launch and watch crawl errors and rankings after it, so a missed page gets fixed in days, not months.

Talk to usFrequently asked questions
Is it safe to keep running Magento 1?
No official security patches have been released since June 2020. Stores can be patched by hand, but the platform and much of its ecosystem are unmaintained, so risk grows over time, and card payments add a PCI compliance concern.
What happens to our Magento 1 extensions?
They do not carry over. We audit each one and map it to a BigCommerce app, a native feature or custom API-driven development, or recommend dropping it.
Can our B2B features move to B2B Edition?
In many cases yes, since B2B Edition covers company accounts, custom pricing and quoting. Very bespoke flows may need custom work. We map your setup during scoping.
Will we lose our SEO rankings?
Not if the redirects are handled properly. BigCommerce lets us keep many existing URLs, we 301 the rest, and we carry over metadata and structured data, then monitor rankings after launch.
Should I move to BigCommerce, Shopify or Magento 2?
BigCommerce and Shopify suit stores that want less upkeep. Magento 2 suits heavy customization and complex B2B. We give an honest recommendation after looking at your store.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Timing depends on catalog size, extensions and data quality, so we scope it after an audit. We work hourly, from $90/hr depending on the plan you choose.
