The honest truth

SaaS to SaaS looks easy. That is the trap.

Both platforms are hosted, so people assume a migration is an export and an import. Then the details show up: different data models, different URL rules, a different checkout and a new set of apps.

Rankings, customer logins and the features shoppers quietly rely on are what go wrong. Nobody lists them on the project plan.

  1. 1

    URLs follow Shopify's rules

Shopify fixes prefixes like /products/ and /collections/. BigCommerce lets you shape URLs more freely, so many addresses change and each one needs a 301.

  2. 2

    Passwords do not travel

Customer accounts can move, but password hashes generally cannot. Plan a clear reset step and tell customers about it in advance.

  3. 3

Apps do not match one to one

Your BigCommerce apps and theme customizations have no direct Shopify twin. Each one is replaced, rebuilt or dropped on purpose.

  4. 4

    Order history becomes a record

Past orders import as history, not live orders. Reporting and customer order pages need checking after the move.

What moves, what changes

Sorted into three piles before we quote

This is the first thing we do with your store, so the quote and the timeline reflect what you really have.

Moves with your data

  • Products, variants and categories
  • Customer accounts and addresses
  • Order history
  • Pages and blog posts
  • Product images and media

Rebuilt for Shopify

  • Your theme, rebuilt in Liquid
  • BigCommerce apps, replaced or rebuilt
  • Custom fields, reshaped as metafields
  • Checkout customizations
  • ERP, 3PL, CRM and marketing connections

Protected for SEO

  • A redirect map from every BigCommerce URL
  • Meta titles, descriptions and image alt text
  • Canonical tags and structured data
  • Sitemap resubmission and crawl monitoring
  • Redirect testing before and after launch

Typical gaps

What Shopify needs help with, and what we do about it

Rich product options and custom fields

Where BigCommerce held them on the product, we model them with metafields, metaobjects or a purpose-built app.

Complex pricing and customer groups

Group pricing is rebuilt with price lists, B2B catalogs or Shopify Functions, depending on your rules.

Search and filtering

We pick and configure a search and filter setup that suits your catalog size, so navigation does not get worse.

Integrations

Each connection is re-pointed at Shopify's APIs, through an existing connector or a small custom app.

Several storefronts or regions

We plan this with Shopify Markets or separate stores, depending on how separate your brands and catalogs really are.

Is this the right move?

Good reasons to switch, and good reasons to stay

Shopify tends to win on its app and theme ecosystem, and on how easy it is to find people who know it. BigCommerce tends to win on built-in features and URL flexibility.

If your pain is a slow theme or one missing feature, fixing that costs less than a migration. If you fight the platform's ecosystem every month, moving can pay for itself.

Shopify is usually the right call when

  • You want a bigger app and developer ecosystem
  • You expect to grow into Shopify Plus features
  • Your team already knows Shopify
  • Checkout and storefront customization matter to you
  • You sell across channels that Shopify supports well

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my rankings moving from BigCommerce to Shopify?

Not if the redirects are right. Shopify's URL prefixes differ from BigCommerce's, so we map every product, category and page, set 301 redirects and test them before and after launch. Some short-term movement is normal and we monitor it closely.

What happens to my BigCommerce apps and customizations?

We audit each one first. It then becomes a Shopify app, a native Shopify feature, a Shopify Function or a small custom build. Nothing gets dropped silently.

Should I move to Shopify or Shopify Plus?

Plus usually makes sense for high order volume, B2B needs, multiple storefronts or deeper checkout control. If your needs are standard, regular Shopify can be enough. We will help you decide during scoping.

Do customer passwords carry over?

Customer accounts and addresses can move, but password hashes generally cannot. Customers set a new password on first login, so we plan a clear email and timing for it.

Will my order history come across?

Yes, as historical records. They do not behave like live orders, so we check how they appear in the admin and on customer accounts after import.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Timing depends on catalog size, apps and customizations, so we scope it after an audit. We work hourly, from $90/hr depending on the plan you choose.
