A migration is a business decision first and a technical one second

Most stores do not need a new platform. They need a faster theme, a cleaner catalog or a fix for one stubborn integration. Replatforming pays off when the platform itself is what holds you back.

We will tell you which situation you are in. Sometimes the honest answer is to stay where you are and fix what hurts.

A migration is usually the right call when

  • The platform cannot do something your business needs
  • Running it costs more than it earns
  • Your team spends more time maintaining than selling
  • Support or security for your version has ended
  • Your plans have outgrown its limits
Signs it is time

Six signs your platform is the problem

Every change is a project

Simple requests need a developer, a workaround or a paid app. Your roadmap keeps slipping for reasons that trace back to the platform.

Maintenance eats your budget

Hosting, patching, version upgrades and extension conflicts take money and attention you would rather spend on growth.

App and extension sprawl

Dozens of add-ons, each with its own fees, bugs and update schedule, and a few of them holding up core features.

Your version is unsupported

End-of-life software stops getting security patches. Magento 1 reached that point in June 2020.

Speed you cannot fix

You have tuned everything that can be tuned and pages are still slow. Sometimes the architecture sets the ceiling.

You are growing into new needs

B2B pricing, several storefronts, new markets or a bigger catalog that your current setup handles awkwardly or not at all.

Choosing a destination

Match the platform to your real needs

There is no best platform, only a best fit. These are the questions that decide it.

Customization depth

Magento 2 gives you source-level control. Shopify and BigCommerce are more opinionated, with apps and APIs filling the gaps. Ask how much of your logic is truly unique.

B2B needs

Deep quote flows, shared catalogs and company hierarchies point toward Adobe Commerce. Shopify Plus and BigCommerce B2B Edition cover many B2B needs natively.

Catalog size and complexity

Very large or heavily configurable catalogs, many attributes or several inventory sources deserve a close look at each platform's data model.

Your team

An in-house developer can run Magento. A lean marketing team usually does better on a managed platform where upgrades and uptime are handled for you.

Budget over years, not months

Count plans or licenses, apps, hosting and developer hours. Cheap to start can be costly to run, and the reverse is true too.

Maintenance burden

Self-hosted means you own patching, performance and uptime. Hosted platforms own them, in exchange for less control.

What decides success

Three things decide whether a migration goes well

01

Your data

Products, variants, customers, orders and content rarely map one to one. We decide what moves, what is reshaped and what is archived, then rehearse until counts and totals match.

02

Your search rankings

Every changed URL needs a 301 redirect, and titles, metadata and structured data need to follow. Some movement after launch is normal. We plan to keep it small.

03

Your integrations

ERP, 3PL, CRM, payments, tax and marketing tools all connect through the old platform. We list each connection early, because they cause most late surprises.

What a migration involves

From first conversation to cutover

  1. 1

    Audit what you have

Catalog, customers, orders, extensions, custom code, integrations and URLs. This is what makes the estimate real.

  2. 2

    Choose and plan

We recommend a destination based on your needs, and map what moves, what is rebuilt and what is retired.

  3. 3

    Build the new store

Theme, apps or modules, and the integrations rebuilt against the new platform while your current store keeps selling.

  4. 4

    Rehearse the migration

Test migrations on a copy, with counts, totals and edge cases compared against your live store.

  5. 5

    Cut over and watch

A timed go-live with redirects in place, then close monitoring of rankings, errors and orders.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it is time to change platforms?

Look at what the platform costs you, not only what it charges. If changes are slow, upkeep is heavy, your version is unsupported or your plans have outgrown its limits, it is worth a serious look. If the pain is one slow page or one missing feature, fix that first.

Which platform should I choose?

It depends on your customization needs, B2B requirements, catalog complexity, team and budget. Magento 2 suits heavy customization and complex B2B. Shopify and BigCommerce suit stores that want less upkeep. We give an honest recommendation after looking at your store.

Will I lose my search rankings?

Not if URLs, redirects and metadata are handled properly, which is why SEO is part of the scope from day one. Some movement after launch is normal, and our job is to keep it small and watch it closely.

What about customer accounts and order history?

Both can usually move. Customer passwords generally cannot, so customers set a new one, and we plan that message. Past orders arrive as history. Exact handling depends on the source and target platforms.

Can my store keep selling during the move?

Yes. The new store is built and tested separately while the current one stays live. The cutover is planned to keep any downtime short.

How long will it take and what will it cost?

It depends on catalog size, customizations, extensions and integrations, so we give a concrete estimate after an audit. We work hourly, from $90/hr depending on the plan you choose.
